From west to east 20 days
This trip is based on arrival in the west (Havana or Varadero) and return flights from the east (Holguín). The advantage of this route is that you only travel from west to east and therefore you have more time for each destination to experience the local atmosphere. It is easier to make stops and to explore the surroundings. From the tobacco fields in Viñales, the fishing village of Playa Girón, the impressive colonial destinations such as Havana, Camagüey, Santiago de Cuba and Trinidad, to the beautiful natural surroundings of the city of Baracoa. You drive from the west coast (Viñales) to the south coast, and finish at the east coast (Baracoa).
Day 1 - Havana Vieja or Vedado
After arriving at Havana or Varadero airport you will travel straight to your casa particular in Havana. Here you can settle in and really start enjoying your holiday!
Day 2 – Havana Vieja of Vedado – Underground bike tour
After the Meet&Greet you will explore the backstreets of Havana with the underground bike tour. Havana has many hidden spots and your guide will take you on a refreshing journey through this amazing city.
Day 3 - Viñales
Early in the morning you travel to the Cuban countryside. At the casa you will receive a warm welcome with a cocktail. Enjoy the beautiful green surroundings!
Day 4 - Viñales – Ecological farm day tour
During the ecological farm day tour, you mingle with the local farmers. You learn about how they produce their organic products. You will enjoy a delicious local meal, prepared by you and the family during a cooking workshop.
Day 5 – Playa Girón
The village itself is lovely and small, and has an interesting museum about the Bay of Pigs invasion. The area is especially attractive because of the breath-taking nature and the various snorkelling spots.
Day 6 – Playa Girón – Sendero del Enigma
Visit nature reserve Ciénaga de Zapata today. In the Cueva de los Peces you can swim among the colourful fish and you can even practice cave diving. Discover and enjoy the flora and fauna of Sendero del Enigma after this.
Day 7 - Trinidad
After an optional stop in Cienfuegos, you will enter lively Trinidad in the early afternoon. Here you have the rest of the day to explore and wander around. Get seated on a sidewalk and enjoy everything that happens around you.
Day 8 – Trinidad – Local bicitour
In the morning your bicitaxi will be ready to show you the most interesting spots in the outskirts of Trinidad. You will visit these places with a real trinitario and get to discover where the real Cuban life takes place.
Day 9 – Trinidad – El Cubano
At less than a 20-minute drive from Trinidad you find the El Cubano natural park. Here you walk a beautiful light level eco-trail up to the Javira waterfall, while the guide tells you everything about the local flora and fauna.
Day 10 – Sancti Spíritus – cooking workshop
Sancti Spíritus has colonial character, an authentic marketplace and it is beautifully located along the Yayabo river. During the cooking workshop you will learn how to combine the real Cuban flavours.
Day 11 - Camagüey
Camagüey does not have an orderly chequerboard street pattern but is very chaotic and confusing. It really is a maze with beautiful narrow streets, that are characterised by typical cobblestones and many picturesque plazas.
Day 12 – Sierra Maestra Villa Santo Domingo
Nature lovers can take beautiful walks in the Gran Parque Nacional Sierra Maestra to spot birds, among many other things. The Pico Turquino is with its 1972 metres the highest point in Cuba.
Day 13 - Sierra Maestra Villa Santo Domingo – Comandancia de la Plata
Together with the guide you will visit the former rebel camp and headquarters of Fidel and his revolutionaries, where they had to hide from General Batista's troops for a long time.
Day 14 - Santiago de Cuba – Salsa workshop
Today it’s time for the musical and swinging city of Santiago de Cuba! Enjoy the salsa workshop and show off your incredible salsa moves. Enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner outside on the patio of your own casa.
Day 15 - Santiago de Cuba
Santiago de Cuba is a vibrant city full of history, culture and parties. The city is a true stronghold of Afro-Cuban culture. Stroll along the El Tivolí neighbourhood, one of the most picturesque areas of Santiago de Cuba.
Day 16 - Baracoa
Baracoa has the most beautiful estuary in Cuba, a beautiful green-blue sea, and an abundance of coconut trees, cocoa and banana plants. Enjoy this green environment and explore the colonial city centre in the afternoon.
Day 17 – Baracoa – Adventure jeep tour
Today you will travel through the natural environment of Baracoa. This excursion shows you the beauties of the Toa river and Maguana beach. You will learn everything about the nature, traditions and history of Baracoa.
Day 18 - Baracoa
On this day you might like to visit the Alexander Van Humboldt natural park, which is also part of the Unesco World Heritage List.
Day 19 - Holguín
Holguín is not as touristy, but the city is gaining popularity due to its compact city centre. A good tip is the Loma de la Cruz, a staircase that takes you up the hill, where you have a beautiful panoramic view of the city.
Day 20 - Return
Unfortunately, the journey has come to an end… but on the bright side: you will go home with a suitcase filled with beautiful memories. Chao Cuba, hasta la próxima vez!
